New Beginnings: Preveza and the Displaced Population

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Preveza and the General Archives of the State – Preveza Department cordially invite you to attend the inaugural event of our temporary exhibition titled “New Beginnings: Preveza and the Displaced Population.” The exhibition opens on Thursday, December 22nd, 2022, at 18:30, at the Archaeological Museum of Nicopolis.

To enhance the festive atmosphere of the exhibition’s launch, students from the traditional music ensemble at Preveza Music School will perform Thrace and Pontian carols, accompanied by musical instruments, under the guidance of teacher Georgios Makrina.

Furthermore, the Cultural and Educational Association of Asia Minor and Pontians of Preveza, along with the Educational and Cultural Association of Archangelos, will graciously provide traditional sweets.

The exhibition, hosted in the versatile hall of theArchaeological Museum of Nicopolis, aims to provide a clear and concise portrayal of the refugee influx into Preveza, the proactive involvement of local authorities and residents in their reception and settlement, the growth of refugee settlements within the Region of Preveza, educational initiatives, glimpses into daily life, and excerpts from oral accounts of the first-generation refugees.

The exhibition culminates with a presentation showcasing the contributions of Preveza’s cultural associations and their creative expressions in the realms of culture, traditions, and customs.

The exhibition’s content is based on the meticulous research of archival and photographic materials, as well as extensive bibliographic research. Archival materials are sourced from the General Archives of the State – Department of Preveza, its Central Service and Historical Archive of the Epirus Directorate, the Holy Metropolis of Nicopolis and Preveza, the Public Central Library of Mytilene, the Municipal Library of Preveza, the 8th Primary School of Preveza, Mr. Yiannis D. Renzos, and Mr. Ioannis Yiannoglou.

A significant portion of the photographic material originates from the archives of the “Actia Nicopolis” Foundation, the Cultural Association of Nea Samsounta “AMISOS,” the Cultural and Educational Association of Asia Minor and Pontians of Preveza, the Educational and Cultural Association of Archangelos, the Pontian Cultural Association of N. Kerasounta, the Educational and Cultural Association of Nea Sinopi“Diogeni,” Ms. Afroditis Pashou, Ms. Maria Haritopoulos, Mr. Kyriakos Kotzamuratoglou, Mr. Stavros Papadopoulos, as well as the collections of Mr. Iosif Ziogas and Andreas Karzis.

The oral narratives are drawn from the editorial series “Exodus” of the Center for Asia Minor Studies and the archive of Ms. Andriana Soldatou (mypreveza).

The exhibition is open to the public daily, from 08:30 – 15:30.
